Things you need to know about your bins
A collection service for two different bins and a recycling box is in use across the Stirling Council area. It aims to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill and increase the amount of material composted or recycled. You can read more about this, including new Scottish Government targets, here.
Most households are provided with:
- Recycling box(es) for cans, bottles, jars, paper, textiles and plastic bottles. This box is emptied weekly and the contents are separated into the collection vehicle at the kerbside and then recycled. You can request up to three recycling boxes.
- Brown bin(s) for compostable garden waste and cardboard. The brown bins are emptied once a fortnight and the contents are composted. Compost made from brown bin material is available free to householders at Lower Polmaise Household Waste Recycling Centre.
- Grey bin -- only one per household -- for non-recyclable mixed household waste only. The grey bins are collected once a fortnight on the alternate week to the brown bin and the contents are landfilled.
Remember
- Put your wheelie bin out at the kerbside on the collection day no later than 07.00 am.
- Bring the bin back in once it has been emptied.
- Only items placed inside of your wheelie bin will be collected. Any waste out with the bin will not be collected.
- For bulky items, a special uplift can be arranged. There are charges for this service depending on the type of material being removed. Contact 0845 277 7000 for further information.
Your Questions
Can I put extra bags out for collection beside my grey bin?
No. We cannot take extra bags beside a bin. All waste should be entirely inside the bin with the lid closed.
Can I put whatever I want out for my normal grey bin collection?
You may put general household waste into your grey bin, but NOT items such as masonry or bricks, car batteries or corrosive chemicals, and so on. Please use your brown bin for garden waste and cardboard and your blue or green box for recyclables.
Does the Council supply sacks for rubbish collections?
We are trying to supply every household with a bin. Only when that is not currently possible will refuse collection sacks be supplied either weekly or annually.
My bin is due to be emptied on a public holiday. When will it be done?
If your bin day falls on a public holiday, your bin will be emptied that day as usual, except over Christmas and New Year, in which case you will be informed of the alternative dates when your bins will be emptied (usually two days later than usual) . To be sure, you can enter your postcode in the my bins pages
What happens if I put the wrong items in my recycling box or brown bin?
One contaminated bin can spoil an entire vehicle load so it is important that the correct items are put in the appropriate bin. If the collection crews notice a wrong item in your box or brown bin, they will not take it.
What should I do if I have additional rubbish which will not fit into my wheelie bin?
First make sure you are recycling all you can and using your brown bin as much as possible. If you still have additional waste, you can either arrange for a special uplift or take it to one of our household waste and recycling centres.
Will the Council clean my wheelie bin?
No. You are responsible for keeping your own bin clean.
I have found a syringe. What should I do?
Call 0845 277 700 and give the syringe's location. The advisor will contact the appropriate department to collect and dispose of the syringe as soon as possible.
