Invasive Plants

Giant hogweed, Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam are highly invasive alien weed species that have escaped from gardens and spread rapidly especially along riverbanks.

Due to their invasive nature these plants can reduce local native biodiversity and reduce access to riverbanks etc.

Giant hogweed

It is distinguished by a stout, dark reddish-purple stem and spotted leaf stalks that are hollow and produce sturdy bristles. Stems vary from 3-8 cm in diameter, occasionally up to 10 cm. The stem shows a purplish-red pigmentation with raised nodules. It can pose a significant health risk if touched.

Japanese knotweed

Has the appearance of bamboo, though it is not closely related. While stems may reach a maximum height of 3-4 m each growing season, it is typical to see much smaller plants in places where they sprout through cracks in the pavement or are repeatedly cut down. It can cause serious physical damage to buildings.

Himalayan balsam

It typically grows to 1 to 2 m high, with a soft green or red-tinged stem, and lanceolate leaves 5-23 cm long. The crushed foliage has a strong musty smell. Because of aggressive seed dispersal, it allows the Himalayan Balsam to outcompete native plants.

Disclaimer

As part of a joint project between Clackmannanshire and Stirling Environment Trust and Stirling Council the location of these plants has been mapped throughout the Stirling Council area. If you spot any of these plants in a location not already recorded on the maps please can you let us know, by calling on 01786 484611 or via email Audrey Morrison.
