Everyone is welcome to visit the Archives and use the public searchroom where the records are made available for research. This area is dedicated to providing a comfortable and specialised research environment that contains document tables and seats; a microfilm or fiche reader/ printer; a reference library; manual finding aids and indexes; power points for laptop users; photocopying facilities; staff reception desk; and magnification lamps.
When you arrive you will be asked to fill in a visitor registration form – a security measure that helps us to protect the records and monitor user rates. When visiting the Archives for the first time please bring some form of ID as proof of name and address, such as a driving licence or recent utility bill. While the Archives Service is not part of County Archives Research Network (CARN), a CARN ticket may be accepted as proof of ID.
Records are accessed by looking through our various catalogues and indexes and by filling in a document request slip. Staff are always on hand to assist and help with any queries you may have about our procedures or the records – never be afraid to ask!
When accessing the records you will be asked to observe our record handling guidelines and searchroom procedures – this helps to minimise any potential damage to the records through mishandling.
We can photocopy original records smaller than A3, but this is subject to copyright and the physical condition of the document. Microform printouts and digital images can also be supplied. While every effort is made to supply copies during the course of your visit, copies may, on occasions, be supplied by post or e-mail. We regret that visitors are not permitted to use their own photographic equipment on the premises. For details of our reprographic rates see our charges.
