The Data Protection Act 1998 protects personal information held on computers and in manual records. It gives rights to the data subject and imposes responsibilities both on individuals and on organisations holding personal data and also on the employees of those organisations who use personal information.

The Council is required to notify the Information Commissioner of the personal data it holds, for what purpose the data is held and to whom it is disclosed.

The Data Protection Act allows you to find out what information the Council holds about you on computer and some paper records. This is called the ‘right of subject access’.

You can see the Information the Council holds about you by making a "subject access request". You can download a Subject Access Request Form, contact any Council Office, phone 0845 277 7000 or
