FUNDING INFORMATION JUNE 2008

CHILDREN

Playground Partnerships 2008 (UK)
Schools within the UK that wish to improve their play spaces have the opportunity to apply for funding through the Playground Partnerships Initiative 2008. A total of £500,000 is available to fund specific improvements and developments to their play environments. Schools can apply for awards of £1,000, £2,000, £5,000 or £10,000. All schools that are short listed will receive at least £250. Schools wishing to apply will first of all need to order the free Playground Partnerships resource pack. To be considered for an award, schools need to submit a folder of work ('portfolio of evidence') and completed application form (mainstream or special school) by post. Applicants are encouraged to
 develop a pupil-led approach;
 involve the whole school;
 encourage input from the wider school community
 and include pupils with special educational needs.

Dare to Care Community Service Volunteers
Dare to Care Community Service Volunteers (CSV) has a number of small grants of between £50-£250 to give to community groups, youth groups and schools that want to get involved in ''Dare to Care: Make Time to Help End Child Poverty''. Small grants support activities that either raise awareness about child poverty or do something practical about it.  Activities can range from big days out and arts and craft projects, to growing a vegetable patch, organising a sports event or regenerating a communal play area. If you already have an activity planned and are happy to brand it with their Dare to Care resources then they would be delighted to support you with a grant, too. Deadline 30th June 2008.

Far too many children live in severe poverty right on our doorstep.   We’re not going to put up with that.  You tell us what would change the lives of children and young people in your area.
Please note that round 2 is OPEN. The CLOSING date is the 11th JULY.

CHILDREN AND OLDER PEOPLE

Tesco Charity Trust Community Awards (UK)
Community and voluntary groups whose core work is supporting children’s welfare or education, elderly people and people with disabilities have the opportunity to apply for grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 through the Tesco Charity’s Community Awards. The Tesco Charity Trust has been in existence since 1987 and aims to provide approximately £600,000 in grants each year. Applications for each programme are considered in two rounds. Organisations supporting children’s welfare and children’s educational projects, including special needs schools need to apply between 1 December – 31 January or 1 May – 30 June each year. Organisations supporting elderly people and people with disabilities need to apply between 1 February – 31 March or 1 August – 30 September.

YOUNG PEOPLE

The Joanies Trust (UK)
Registered charities working with young people aged 11 to 25 are eligible to apply for grants through the Joanies Trust. Each year, the Trust makes approximately 30 grants with an average value of £1,000 to support projects that offer intensive support to young people as well as those that promote preventative work, and especially those that are designed to lead to individual development through integration, work opportunities or accreditation. In particular the Trust is looking to support projects that show innovation and imagination as well as evidence of close consultation with young people in developing their project. The next deadline for applications is the 31st August 2008.

Crime Cash to Fund Culture Scheme (Scotland)
Thousands more Scottish youngsters are to benefit from new opportunities to access the arts under the latest initiative from the Scottish Government's CashBack for Communities programme. As part of a wider £1.8 million culture fund drawing money seized from the ill-gotten gains of convicted criminals, £600,000 will go to the CashBack for Communities Arts and Business Match Fund to support increased cultural activities for vulnerable youngsters. The project, a partnership with Arts and Business Scotland (A&BS), is the first culture scheme supported by the Proceeds of Crime Act. A&BS will encourage Scottish businesses to match every £1 of government investment, thereby doubling the money and releasing a minimum of £1,200,000 over the next two years. The funds will then be used to promote social inclusion through the arts for looked after young people between the ages of 10 and 19 years.

VOLUNTEERING

The Volunteering Scotland Grants Scheme (Scotland)
The Voluntary Action Fund (VAF) has confirmed that its flagship volunteering investment fund is once more open for business. The Volunteering Scotland Grant Scheme (VSGS) can provide funding for up to three years for projects that attract harder to reach volunteers. The Volunteering Scotland Grant Scheme (VSGS) has 2 different types of grant available. Main grants of up to £35,000 per year are available for one, two or three years. In addition the VAF will also make one off grants of up to £5,000 through its small grants programme. Examples of the type of activities that can be funded include;
 volunteer training;
 planning and consultation events that involve volunteers;
 staff training where it will lead to the improved involvement of volunteers;
 attendance at conferences and networking events that are relevant to volunteers
 as well as funding for a dedicated post (part or full-time) plus running costs for a volunteering project that targets hard-to-reach volunteers and volunteers who have experienced disadvantage . The closing date for the first round of the main grant has passed. Applications for small grants are considered throughout the year.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Its Your Community Initiative (UK)
O2 have committed £1 million to the “Its Your Community” initiative. Its Your Community, which is managed by the Conservation Foundation, provides grants of £100 to £1,000 to individuals and groups to improve their local environment. The type of projects supported in the past included environmental projects such as turning derelict land into an amenity park or wildlife area, tree planting, creating a wildlife pond, renovating neglected river and canal footpaths, providing water butts and recycling facilities in village halls, etc. The commitment by O2 means that the initiative will now be able to support up to 60 projects per month. Applications can be made at any time.

CSV Action Earth / SNH Biodiversity Awards
CSV Action Earth Campaign has two different grants to assist you. SNH Biodiversity Awards of £250 are available to groups creating or improving habitats for wildlife. Projects could include planting, creating or renovating existing sites and making nesting boxes.CSV Action Earth Grants of £50, supported by Morrison's, are available to projects planting bulbs, creating footpaths, recycling, litter picking and a whole range of other activities. Both grants can be used to help volunteers with materials, plants, tools, equipment, travel and refreshments. The deadline for application is 7th July 2008.

E-on Funding for Local Sustainable Energy Projects (England, Scotland & Wales)
Local community groups and not for profit organisations located in England, Scotland and Wales that wish to implement sustainable energy projects in their buildings have the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £30,000 through the E.ON Source Fund. Examples of organisations that have been funded in the past include schools, local-based and national charities, special education colleges and wildlife parks. Projects that can be considered for funding include the purchase and installation of one or more renewable energy technologies (e.g. wind, solar thermal, PV, wood etc); the renovation of existing facilities to incorporate micro-generation technology; an energy efficiency makeover for building that could demonstrate significant energy savings and also behavioural change amongst users; the use of new or innovative technology to deliver either energy savings or micro-generation capacity; projects which can demonstrate the intelligent use of waste energy (e.g. a district heating system that uses waste heat from one building to heat or power another). The deadline for applications is the 3rd October 2008.

ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

Architectural Heritage Fund (UK)
The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF), which is a registered charity that promotes the conservation and regeneration of historic buildings in the UK. Funding is available to voluntary organisations building preservation trusts to regenerate historic buildings to create community and education facilities, workspace and homes. To be eligible to apply for funding through the AHF, organisations need to be a registered charity and the building(s) must be listed, scheduled as an ancient monument or in a Conservation Area (if in a Conservation Area, it must be of acknowledged historic or architectural importance). The project must also involve a change of ownership and/or a change of use. Previously funded projects include turning a run down historic buildings into community theatres, resource centres, community learning centres, workspaces, places to live and community meeting places, etc. The closing date for applications is the 14th August 2008.

COMMUNITIES

Biffawards Flagship Programme (UK)
Biffawards, which awards grants to community and environmental projects through monies raised from landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services has announced, that it’s “Flagship” Programme is now open for applications. Through its “Flagship” Programme, Biffawards will be looking to support regionally or nationally significant voluntary sector led regeneration or biodiversity projects. In 2008 the priority themes supported through the programme will be rebuilding biodiversity and cultural facilities. The programme will no longer support community buildings. Flagship projects involve the community working together with a variety of partner organisations to have a major impact on quality of life and/or the environment. Suitably qualified organisations can apply for grants of between £150,000 - £500,000.  In addition Biffawards makes grants of up to £50,000 through its Community and Biodiversity main grants programme as well as grants of up to £5,000 through its small grants programme. The closing date for applications is the 1st July 2008.  To apply for main and small grants projects have to be within 10 miles of a Biffa site; for the Flagship programme projects have to be within 25 miles of a Biffa site.

Red Nose Days Funding Programme (UK)
Comic Relief operates a number of grant schemes through its Red Nose Days funding programme. Grants are provided through both its large grants scheme (over £5,000) and its small grants scheme (under £5,000).  Although the application deadline for grants over £5,000 has now passed, registered charities as well as constituted voluntary and community groups can still apply for grants of less than £5,000. Grants are available through six programme areas. These are: Young people; Older People; Mental Health; Refugees & Asylum Seekers; Domestic Violence; and Disadvantaged Communities . The grants are made for between one and three years. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and there is no application deadline.

POVERTY/GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT

DFID Development Awareness Fund (UK)
The Department for International Development (DFID) has announced that the next funding round under the Development Awareness Fund will open on the 30th May 2008. The aim of the fund is to promote awareness and understanding of global poverty and development issues. The Fund is open to any UK-based not-for-profit organisation or network to promote public knowledge and understanding of development issues. During the last funding round 26 UK based organisations received grants totalling £5.6 million for projects including fair trade football tournaments, a project to increase the involvement of older people in the UK in the development debate, radio lessons for schoolchildren in developing countries, and farm visits for 5 -11 year olds. Under the DAF, eligible organisations and networks can apply for grants ranging from £10,000 to £100,000 per annum for a maximum of three years.  A small grants programme from £1000 to £10000 is also operating.
