I have been a member of the Scottish National Party since 1966 and have held a variety of posts in my local branch and constituency. I stood for the Westminster Parliament in 1974 in Glasgow, coming second to the then Secretary of State for Scotland.
I am an experienced, qualified management coach who has worked throughout the private and public sectors.
Prior to setting up my own Consultancy I was the Scottish Director of The Work Foundation (formally The Industrial Society). In addition to my extensive experience in management development and executive coaching, I have also held a number of senior management positions in the travel and leisure industries in London and the North East of England.
I am Chairman of the Scottish and UK judging panels for The National Training Awards and a Board member of UK Skills whose purpose is to help the UK raise vocational skills standards to world-class levels. I am also a member of the Recognition Panel for Investors in People Scotland and served as a non-executive director on Stirling Royal Infirmary NHS Trust hospital. In February 2009 I was appointment Chairman of the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority).
I’m married with two grown-up children and have lived in Dunblane for over 22 years. I am a Fellow of The RSA, a Fellow of the British Institute of Management and a Member of The Association of Management Education and Development and currently contribute to leadership thinking on the Strathclyde Graduate Business School MBA Programme.
Leisure interests include golf, gardening and reading. I am an active member of Rotary and an elder in the Church of Scotland. I am currently learning Tai Chi.
