Council website does it again

Tuesday, 25th March, 2008

After winning the award for Best Scottish Local Authority Website in 2006, SoCITM (Society of Information Technology Management) included Stirling Council in their top 20 local authority web sites out of all 468 local authorities in Britain.

The site received an excellent status in accessibility and usability meaning the web site is easily used by anyone.

SoCITM has identified the Top 20 best web sites in order to provide examples to the local government community and others about where they might look for good practice.

Stirling Council is increasing online facilities to allow customers to interact with the Council through the web site.  For example, residents and businesses can now pay council tax, rent and sundry accounts online; report a fault, such as a streetlight or a pothole; or contact their councillor.

Residents can find out more information on their own area by simply typing their postcode.  The type of information they can find out includes school catchment areas, when bins will be emptied, and where the nearest library, local office, bus stop and recycling centres are, with maps and distance information.

Stirling Council’s Web Services Team Leader, Yvonne Dickson said: When developing the site we asked customers what they wanted.  We then asked some of them to come in and help us which allowed us to structure the site around the needs of our customers.  This ensured they could find exactly what they were looking for quickly and easily.

People use the web in many different ways, therefore we must provide easily accessible information so that everyone, no matter what age or background, has a seamless and enjoyable experience.”
