The Poets Still Throwing Up Their Hands

This exhibition was of work by three artists, of Danish, German and Scottish origin, whose practices are based within a wide range of drawing and painting. They share an interest in narrative, language and a playful attitude towards their chosen materials.

Kalin Lindena was a graffiti artist before attending art school, and her more recent work with fabric maintains the same open method, both in the range of materials she uses and in her overall approach.  In the floor of the main gallery space she showed Schöpferin (She-Creator). The large figure is a copy of the Paul Klee painting Schöpfer (The creator) from 1934, reconfigured through intuitive sewing from second-hand garments.  Lindena also created more structured sculptural works in the form of costume parts that were originally made for characters in a recent video work, and adorned by various significant objects.

Lotte Gertz produced a new group of works that explore her interest in combining printmaking and collage techniques.  She uses Danish absurd poetry as a departure point to develop work that sit between formal concerns and a new narrative.  The use of limited colours and repeat patterns unites the series.

Jane Topping exhibited a series of small works on paper that combine found text and images in a way that creates multiple meanings and forces imaginary connections.  The series also creates its own narrative in the linear display across the wall of the gallery and the repetition of motifs.  Alongside these were single paintings on board that introduce colour in a restricted way.
