The Changing Room presented a group exhibition celebrating the 10th anniversary of the gallery.
Voluntary Action showcased artwork from a roster of over 50 volunteers who have run the gallery over the last ten years and was organised by current volunteer staff.
Since 1997 The Changing Room has not only brought emerging and established artistic talent of international standing to Stirling - such as the solo commission A Public Announcement in 1998 with this year’s Turner Prize nominee Nathan Coley - but has provided a critical forum for vocational training and peer support for locally-based artists and young people to explore, develop and challenge their ideas and experience of art.
Voluntary Action included work by over 20 artists offering a wide range of approaches, styles, ideas and artforms in a dynamic show. The exhibition offered a platform to Sarah Forrest, Amy Marletta and Stephen Murray to exhibit new work developed from their residency at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden, Aberdeenshire. Alongside this was also new work by Emma Hamilton, winner of the 2004 Jerwood Photography Award; site-responsive sculpture by Bea Drysdale; prints by Frances Ryan; a mural incorporating sound by recent Glasgow School of Art graduate David McNeil; and experiments with sculptural form by current GSA Environmental Art student Gary Bolam.
The first UK screenings of Sad In Country (Part 1) by Catherine Vertige and Kosten Koper and LOST: Gas Station by Ruth Pringle was the highlight of the exhibition closing event on 8 September.
A text accompanied the show written by Jenny Brownrigg, the director of the exhibitions department at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee.
