R.F.I.D.
Craig Mulholland
6 - 9 July 2005
Against the backdrop of the G8 summit in Gleneagles, Perthshire The Changing Room invited artist Craig Mulholland to use the gallery as a project space to develop a new body of work, fuelled by an interest in the emerging technology, radio frequency identification tagging (RFID). The work explored ideas of surveillance and civil liberty issues, considering the implications of this controversial new tracking system, which soon could replace barcodes on everyday items.
A series of framed drawings and sculptures become components in a circuit of graphite lines, which spanned the gallery walls, mimicking the logistics of retail security networks. The installation centred on a video/animation, which generated a short narrative loop using surveillance footage of The Changing Room and Crawford Arcade, the Victorian shopping arcade in which the gallery is located. The exhibition was accompanied by a lecture by Dr Neil Mulholland on ambient technology.
