Some Measured Curiosities
Michael Mallett and Ellen Munro
27 May – 25 June 2005
Some Measured Curiosities brought together the work of two Scotland-based artists, Michael Mallett and Ellen Munro. Both artists use found objects and found images, taking them out of their original context, and through an intricate process of re-working, give them new meaning.
Michael Mallett produced a series of large-scale collages for the exhibition, made with imagery derived from media outlets and public spaces with colour from vinyl tape and paint. The work existed as abstract entities involving imaginary spaces, formal questions and heartfelt dread
Ellen Munro's work related to memories and stories she has picked up over time. Munro employs an eclectic vocabulary, which combines traditional craft processes, often using found objects, which are transformed in an extraordinary way. Working directly onto the gallery walls Munro’s design echoed a stage set referencing the Art Deco style of the twenties and early thirties.
