Deep In This Custard
Torsten Lauschmann, Marcus Mitchell, Fred Pedersen, Michael Wilkinson
19 February - 17 March 2000

Deep in this Custard brought together for the first time four Glasgow based artists who share an interest in representing the strange, the natural and the familiar.

An analysis of the everyday, this work took its inspiration from the street, the home and the supermarket. By shifting reference points or changing contexts, these four Glasgow artists question our experience of the ordinary, turning the mundane into the profound or ridiculous.

Torsten Lauschmann showed a collection of recent work on video. 'Belichtungen, Remember things before they happen' (in collaboration with Robert Kennedy) and 'Goldmund' explore the struggle between sound, image and narrative.

Visual representations of the landscape both natural and urban are a recurrent theme in Marcus Mitchell's work. The idea of a souvenir, the need to capture a moment from a landscape through visual imagery and transport it is the basis for the video 'Highland Scene' and painting 'City Limits'.

'Bei Mir Bist Du Schön' was Fred Pedersen's attempt to construct a time machine in the gallery by drilling a vast number of holes in some chipboard, under the cover of a smoke machine.

'Record Collection'is a sculpture of part of Michael Wilkinson's own record collection. This was an ongoing project that has developed from a piece of work first shown at The Changing Room in December 1998 as part of Browsing 2. These were the first 43 in the series and include paintings of New Order's Ceremony, Six 12"s on the Berlin Chain Reaction label, two Pole albums, Dave Clark's Red, six records on New York label Wordsound, Kit Clayton and Burnt Friedmanns's releases on Scape, Kraftwerks Autobann and many others.

'Wall Painting' is an attempt to reconcile the traditions of wall painting a la Daniel Burren with that of the other Changing Room a la Lawrence Llewllyn Bowen.

Accompanied by a text by Rob Tufnell.
