"Made Space . . . is cool, smart and almost terminally elegant." - The Toronto Globe and Mail
Made Space presented the work of five contemporary British artists whose practices engage with an extended discipline of drawing - including works on paper and wood, digital print, wall paintings and wall drawings. The exhibition opened at the Pekao Gallery, Toronto in April 2000 and toured to Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh (November/December 2000).
Made Space explored the relationship between physical and psychological spaces. Graphite wall drawings articulated and imposed upon the architectural framework of the gallery (Johnston) and drawn architectural surfaces are physically framed by the actual materials (Priest). Drawings of oversized wigs hovered in white space (Gluzberg), sparse line drawings traced the lineage of a non-existent family (Avery) and diagrammatic layers of line visually depicted non-visual sensory experience (Heath). All the works offered instances where constructions of reality and projection coexist - where concrete representations offered covert glimpses of alternate spaces and identities.
Exhibition curated by Atopia Projects.
Accompanied by a publication including images of the exhibition at Pekao Gallery, new texts on each artist and an essay by the curators exploring the curatorial premise of Made Space. The publication is available at The Changing Room or from Atopia Projects atopia@hotmail.com
