Roles

Stirling Council Countryside Service has a number of volunteers who undertake a number of different tasks for us. The Ranger Service has its own volunteers who help them with their work, whilst the Access Team have other volunteers who help with Countryside Access in the Stirling Council Area.

The Access Volunteers

Path Surveyor

A Path Surveyor’s role involves walking a route and recording the details using a standard survey sheet. In order to be able to maintain our paths and keep them in good condition, the Council holds records of many routes in our area – Rights of Way. Some of these records needed updating and others simply don’t exist. The Surveyor’s role was to walk these paths and record their walk on a standard survey sheet in order to give us a picture of the path itself.-

Our Path Surveyors have now surveyed all of the paths we are aware of in the Stirling Council Area and this information has been added to our path database (Countryside Access Management System).

Path Inspector
We currently run an ‘Adopt a Path’ scheme which involves fully trained Path Inspectors inspecting specific paths (their adopted paths) four times a year (seasonally). The aim of these regular path inspections is to keep paths in good condition by spotting any problems at an early stage and therefore preventing expensive repair work. Working with local Path Inspectors means the Countryside Service has a direct link to what is happening on the paths.

The Stirling Council Access Team envisages that all of our higher priority paths will have a Path Inspector to keep an eye on them throughout the year.

If you are interested in becoming a Path Inspector please contact , Community Access Officer, to discuss further and take a look at the job description.

Historical Researcher
We currently have a voluntary Historical Researcher whose role it is to reference all path information we have in various archived files. This is an on-going project and will allow us to record it and enable its easy access by Countryside staff, thus providing a historical reference to the use of certain paths and therefore evidence for the path’s potential inclusion in the Core Path Plan.
