Under 5's

Book Collections

Collections of books are issued twice per year to Under 5s Groups within the Stirling Council area from a special collection of appropriate books housed in the Young People's Services Section at Library Headquarters. The under 5s group playleader can come into Library HQ to choose the books in person or the collection can be made up by the staff of the Young People's Services Section according to guidelines given by the individual under 5s group.

These collections are issued at the beginning of the school year in August, then again at the beginning of the calendar year,  either directly to the group or via the local Community or Mobile Library (this decision depends on the location of the group's premises). The collections are returned during the second week of December and June in the same way, so that staff can work on them during the holiday period.

Groups, which meet during the summer weeks, can receive a reduced collection for the duration of the school holidays.

Collections normally consist of about 30/40 books depending on the size of the group and can comprise a selection of board books, picture books, oversize story books, multi-cultural stories, books on first experiences, story cassettesor CDs and books specially requested by the playleader. (NB This should be done in advance to ensure that we can satisfy the request).

Storytelling

Under 5's groups are encouraged to visit their local library for storytelling session at a time to suit both parties. This should be done by contacting your local Librarian to make arrangements. On occasions the Librarian may be willing to visit your group at its meeting place.

Where the group is not close to a community Library, you should contact the Young People's Services Librarian at Library HQ, who will discussthe possibility of visiting for storytelling.
