Q: I’m pregnant. What maternity benefits can I get?
A: You may be entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay if you are working - it is paid for 18 weeks.
Maternity Allowance can be paid to pregnant women who cannot get Statutory Maternity Pay - it is paid for 18 weeks.
If you're on a low income, the Sure Start Maternity Grant is a one-off payment to help towards costs of a new baby. The grant comes from the Social Fund and you don't have to repay it.

A: The National Childbirth Trust offers support in pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood.

A: Child Benefit can be paid to a person who has responsibility for a child under 16, or under 19 and in full-time education.
Child Tax Credit is for people who are responsible for at least one child or qualifying young person. Child Tax Credit is income related and paid directly to the person who is mainly responsible for caring for the child or children.

Q: Can I get help with paying for school clothing?
A: Parents/guardians may apply for a grant to help with their child’s school clothing costs. The maximum amount of grant is £50 per child.
If you receive Income Support or Jobseekers’ Allowance (income based) you will be eligible. If you receive Working Tax Credit your entitlement will be based on income.
