Dealing with a still-birth is a distressing and traumatic experience. Registering the event is however something that cannot be avoided. Our aim is to make the registration experience as simple as possible.
The legal definition of a still-born child is: A child that has been born after the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy and did not breathe or show any other sign of life.
A registered medical practitioner or registered midwife will issue a certificate of still-birth (form 6) for production to the registrar.
A still-birth occurring in Scotland must be registered in Scotland within 21 days.
Please do not hesitate to contact the Registrar if you require statutory declaration forms or if you have any queries regarding this process.
