Cockroaches

General Information

  • cockroaches are large insects which range in size from 10-23mm in length, they have long antennae and two sets of wing
  • cockroaches are nocturnal by nature
  • they spend the day hiding in cracks or under floor covering
  • cockroaches can carry food poisoning organisms on their bodies and will feed on almost anything including faecal matter
  • they are active and scavenge over wide areas
  • the young are white in colour but rapidly darken to medium brown

Significance

  • cockroaches are not a common problem in Scotland.
  • found in warm indoor environments especially institution heating systems

Preventative Treatment

ensure all foods are covered work and floor surfaces should be cleaned block all cracks and holes in walls and stepsunsound surfaces (eg tiles) should be made good and any possible harbourage sealed with a suitable filler.
