Mining Bees

General Information

  • are solitary bees – female forms multiple individual nests in sandy soil e.g. lawns
  • appears as a small volcano-like mound with the soil excavated from the nest
  • may use same area year after year
  • mainly feed on pollen
  • are unable to sting humans

Significance

  • can be a minor nuisance on lawns until mid summer
  • are beneficial to nature by pollinating flowers
