Can I educate my child at home?

If your child is currently attending a local authority school you will have to request permission to withdraw your child from school and to confirm that you are assuming responsibility for their education. There are other procedures if your child is not currently attending/never attended school.

What practical support will be offered to help me educate my child at home?

Local Authority staff may offer advice to families; other forms of support such as equipment, books or other resources will not normally be made available.

How do I enrol my child at school?

Primary Schools place an advertisment in the local press for enrolment to Primary 1. This will usually take place in January. For enrolment at other stages of primary school or secondary school, please contact the school to arrange a convenient time.

What age should my child start school?

Children whose 5th birthday falls between 1 March and the last day of February of the following year will automatically be admitted school at the start of term in August of the first year.

If you feel your child isn't ready to start school and would benefit from another year at nursery, you can apply for deferred entry. Contact the Head of Nursery who can give guidance and an application form.

Requests for early entry (if a child is not 4 by 28/29 February) can be considered. Please write to the Head of Learning and Development, Children's Services, at the address given at the top of this webpage. We will arrange to assess your child's readiness to start school.

Which is my local school?

Most children attend their local school. If you're not sure which school that is, contact Children's Services on 01786 442605.

Can I choose a school for my child?

Yes. Legislation is in place allowing parental choice. This is called making a placing request. You need to make a request in writing. Further information is available from schools or from Children's Services on 01786 442605.

My child has special needs. How can Stirling Council help?

There are a number of special needs schools within Stirling Council. If you are moving into the area and your child has previously attended a special needs school, contact the Psychological Service on 01786 443253 for advice.

What will my child learn at Primary School?

In Scotland there is a curricular framework called 5-14 which has five strands - Language, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Expressive Arts and RME (Religious and Moral Education). Within this framework there are levels against which pupils' attainment is measured. These are called levels A-F. Children also have the opportunity to learn a Modern Language.

How is my child's progess monitored?

You will receive a progress report from the school every year. If you have any concerns at any time about your child's progress, please don't hesitate to discuss this with your child's teacher or headteacher.
