Sites & Monuments

Stirling Council's Archaeology Officer is responsible for the maintenance of the Stirling and Clackmannanshire Sites and Monuments Record (S&CSMR). This is a computerised database linked to a GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping system which holds information on sites of archaeological or historical interest in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire Council areas. In order to increase the accessibility of information to the public, an online summary version of the SMR database can be searched through this site (Online Search Help page available).

NB: This on line summary version is NOT suitable for Planning, Utility or Rural Stewardship or Forestry Applications (see also Conditions of Use).

At present it contains details of around 5,750 known archaeological sites and some 775 recorded findspots. These include sites and objects of all types and periods from the earliest period of human activity in the area, around 7,500 years ago, to structures which survive from the Second World War. The Record is updated and expanded when additional information becomes available from a variety of sources, including archaeological fieldwork which has taken place as a result of planning decisions as well as reports of finds from local societies and interested individuals.

New discoveries can be reported to the Council's Archaeology Officer, however, it should be noted that the discovery of human remains must be reported immediately to the police. Object finds should be reported to the local museum.

The S&CSMR is a public record and forms a resource for research, education and community development. The detailed Record, which includes maps, photographs, articles and reports, is held in the Council offices and can be consulted by prior appointment. Telephone, e-mail and written enquiries are also welcome.
