Conservation Area Character Appraisals

Conservation Area Character Appraisals

Conservation Areas, introduced in 1967 under Section 61 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1967, are defined as 'areas of special architecture or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to protect or enhance'.

The Act also required the local authority to formulate and publish a set of proposals for the preservation and enhancement of each conservation area, by way of a thorough appraisal of its character and appearance. These appraisals provide a framework for assessing development proposals within the conservation areas in question and are supplementary to the Councils local plans.

Currently the finalised Stirling Town Character Appraisal is available to view.
