How we are doing

Stirling along with Falkirk and Clackmannanshire Councils are entering a period of change with regard to how they deal with waste. The Forth Valley Area Waste Plan sets out what will happen over the next 20 years. This can be downloaded from the SEPA website, a ‘Plain English’ guide is also available from SEPA and Stirling Council.

The key difference is the amount of waste separation required. Stirling Council has set a target of recycling 25% of its waste by 2006 and 30% by 2010. By 2013, we need to be reducing, reusing, recycling, composting and otherwise diverting from landfill around 63% of our municipal solid waste. That's around 10 times as much (in terms of tonnage) as in 2001-2002.

To meet these targets, a large-scale recyclable collection and source separated green waste collection is being implemented as part of the Area Waste Plan . Stirling households will get a brown wheelie bin for garden waste and cardboard, and the current kerbside collection pilot will be expanded. Communities will be encouraged to develop local projects that have added social or environmental value along these lines. Development of centralised and local community composting sites also will be critical to success.
