Local History

All of our libraries hold a collection of local material relevant to their area.

However, the greatest resource is in the Reference Department of Central Library, Stirling. The library holds a selection of business directories from the nineteenth century onwards including the CD ROM of Pigot's 1825 directory for Scotland and valuation rolls for the burgh of Stirling can be viewed in microfilm form for the years from 1855-1902.

A number of local newpapers are available on microfilm, the oldest being the "Stirling Journal", available from 1820-1970 with an accompanying index. Some years of  the "Callander Advertiser" and "Bridge of Allan Gazette" are also available on microfilm. The "Stirling Observer" is available on microfilm 1836 to date. The Christmas Annual produced by the latter from 1911 to 1969 is also on microfilm at the library, with photographs indexed. These record thousands of weddings and people in that period
