One of the two regiments later amalgamated into the Argylls, the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders,showed during the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War the kind of discipline, character and spirit which throughout history has enabled the Argylls to win the day against overwhelming superior odds
Upon being charged by the Russians, the lined-up Argylls automatically surged forward ...."Stand still, damn you!" shouted the commanding officer, full of admiration for the resolution of his men yet retaining order and discipline.
This encapsulates the spirit of the Argylls - first class leaders and soldiers who will take the fight to the enemy. The Battle also provided the Argylls with their honourable epithet 'The Thin Red Line'.
The 'Argylls' were amalgamated in 1881 from the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders and the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders, both of which had distinguished themselves in many campaigns, including the Napoleonic Wars, the Boer War, the Zulu Wars, and the Indian Mutiny - which saw no less than seven Victoria Crosses awarded. more...
