Argyll's Ludgings
Not far from the Castle is Argyll's Ludgings, the finest and most complete surviving example in Scotland of a 17th Century town residence. Built by Sir William Alexander, founder of Nova Scotia, the Lodgings passed to the Argyll family on his death.
Using many original plans uncovered, wallcoverings, carpets and furniture have been made by craftsmen, so the principal rooms are exactly as they would have been in the 1680's during the 9th Earl of Argyll's occupation.
Near the Argyll's Ludgings is the beautifully restored Stirling Old Town Jail. Built in 1800's amidst a climate of prison reform, it replaced the notorious Tolbooth Hail which had held Stirling's prisoners in wretched conditions for 400 years. more...
