The university's Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christine Hallett, is proud of Stirling's reputation for student-centred teaching methods rather than subject or teacher-centred approaches.
It was the first university in the UK to divide the academic year into two semesters rather than three terms, and to develop courses which allow students to change subjects. Stirling also replaced assessment based wholly on exam results with a unique blend of periodic testing and examination.
In three decades the relationship between "town and gown" has gone from strength to strength. Its students and 1,800 staff are very much part of the local community, with strong cultural, social and business links to Stirling. This mutual respect can only grow in the new millennium.
