Fair trade
Fairtrade is an international movement for trading practices to guarantee a better deal for disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries. This means agreed and stable prices for producers, long-term trading relationships and support to gain skills for developing businesses. The Fairtrade price includes a premium which is set aside for social and environmental projects or to strengthen producer organisations. This allows communities to invest in long-term improvements, such as building and operating schools.
In March 2004, Stirling Council passed a motion in support of Fairtrade and this, combined with the work of the local Fairtrade Propellor Group, led to the award of Fairtrade City Status. All beverages available in the Members’ lounge are Fairtrade, all coffee supplied in the staff canteen is Fairtrade, and some vending machines also use Fairtrade products.
