Darnley, now Darnley's Coffee house.Darnley house is located at the foot of Broad Street is the house where Mary Queen of Scots second husband, Lord Darnley, is said to have stayed while the Royal entourage resided at the castle.
It was owned by Erskine of Gogar but is known as Darnley's House.
An unusual architectural feature is the barrel-vaulted, ground floor, which is not connected to the upper floors.
By late 16th Century it was known to be owned by the Earl of Mar, Governer of Stirling Castle.
Many families would have shared the building and in the 17th Century Janet Kilbowie ran part of the house as a tavern and meeting place.
