Now the Barceló Stirling Highland Hotel. It is a very prestigious hotel in the city and used to be the high school.
Built in 1788, this 3 storey school was the design of Gideon Gray. It was a grammar school until 1856.
For around 70 years this was the "Grammar School" of Stirling and there is a mentoin of one of its predecessors in the Burgh Records of 1523.
There is an earlier reference to a school in Stirling dating back to the 12th Century, when there was a church school in the town.
Education had to be paid for, and for centuries few children would have had the chance of an education.
