The fascination with Wallace has endured for centuries. But what do we know about the man himself?
Wallace must have been a large man. His sword, which you can see at the National Wallace Monument, is a two-handed monster, with a fearsome 4ft 4ins (1.2m) blade. To wield such a weapon Wallace probably stood more than 6ft 6ins tall.
Wallace would not have worn tartan, which belongs to a later period of Scottish history. Nor did Scots wear war paint at this time. Wallace was a knight and would have worn armour.
It’s likely Wallace’s native language was Early Scots, known in his day as ‘Inglis’. ‘Scotis’ was the name for the Gaelic language.
