Vital Stirling

The vitality of Scotland’s six cities is central to the country’s economic growth.

With this in mind the Scottish Government launched the project, Building Better Cities in 2003 and invited Stirling to bid for money from the City Growth Fund.

Stirling was awarded more than £3.5million over three years. The money is being channelled into four themes: Sustainable Stirling, Healthy Stirling, Inclusive Stirling and Vital Stirling.

Sustainable Stirling is a key element of all developments in the city. Funding will be used to promote sustainable building concepts which the council is involved in.

The World Health Organisation has recognised Stirling as a healthy city. Work is now continuing to promote health awareness, including the launch of Active Stirling, which aims to boost sport and physical activity for everyone.

Inclusive Stirling is about appreciating that a vibrant city needs to include and involve all of its citizens.

Vital Stirling focuses on the vitality of the city centre as the key component of urban living. A Framework for Action has been drawn up for a programme of works covering the next 15 years.

It is a massive undertaking which will see investment in public realm areas to improve the attractiveness, performance and competitiveness of the city. A series of projects will also complement the beauty and history of our city and enhance the city-centre areas for visitors, residents and business.

Investment in our attractive city centre streets should help to boost the city’s economy. The improvements will be clearly linked to projects designed to enhance tourism and shopping, the evening and entertainment economy, and conservation of the historic parts of the city.

A series of articles on this website will look at Vital Stirling projects ranging from street makeovers to plans to help people find their way more easily about the city with new signs, maps, orientation blades, interpretation plaques and electronic information boards,
