Advice about dogs at Christmas

“Animals should not be given as Christmas gifts”, warns the Council’s kennel keeper, Anne Vines. “It’s a very sad fact that every year too many dogs end up back at Bandeath as unwanted gifts so we have stopped selling dogs in the run up to Christmas.”

Owners are also advised to take extra care of their dogs during this time.  Dogs should not be left for prolonged periods and owners should be aware that there may be fireworks during the holidays, especially around New Year. Owners of dogs with a nervous nature are advised to consult their vet for advice.

Kennel staff and dog wardens at Bandeath would also like to extend a big thank you to the small army of volunteers who help walk the dogs each day and in all weathers.

“This helps the dogs, keeps them fit and relieves the stress of being in the kennels,” said Anne.

The Shelter will be open over Christmas and New Year only for the collection of lost dogs as follows:

Christmas Day  9am. – 11am
Boxing Day  9am – 11am
New Year’s Day  9am – 11am
2nd January 2012 9am – 11am

Bandeath’s telephone number is 01786 812908. Lost dogs should also be reported to the police.  During the rest of the festive period the Shelter will operate normal opening hours of 9am – 12 noon and 1pm – 4pm, Monday to Friday; and 9am – 12 noon on Christmas Eve and Hogmanay.
