Stirling debates impact of oil shortages

Friday, 23rd November, 2007

FUEL at £1 per litre - what will happen to Stirling's economy when it reaches £2 a litre?

Local residents, businesses and public authorities are being encouraged to take part in the topical discussion on the potential impacts and timescales of 'Peak Oil and Carbon Emissions'.

‘Peak Oil’ refers to the production of oil and how demand will outstrip supply when production declines in future years. The conference organised and Chaired by Rachel Nunn co-founder of Going Carbon Neutral Stirling and supported by Stirling Council’s Executive Member with Portfolio for Environment, Councillor Graham Reed, is to increase awareness of all issues surrounding this topic.

Guest speaker, Ben Brangwyn, co-founder of the Transition Town Network, will give a presentation and talk about the implications for individuals, communities and businesses.

There are no admission charges for the two sessions, which will be held on Tuesday December 4, 2007 at Stirling’s Municipal Buildings, Corn Exchange Road, Stirling

·Community Presentation - 7.30pm to 9.30pm - Understanding and Preparing for Impacts on communities and lifestyles: by Ben Brangwyn

This evening session looks at local communities; how they will be impacted by price increases, perhaps the availability of daily commodities such as petrol, healthcare and food.

This session looks at practical ways that a community can act now, to help ensure the resources its needs with a lower reliance on oil.
