Light pollution

Artificial lighting can be used to promote buildings, enhance gardens and provide increased safety and security.  Inappropriately installed lighting, such as poorly directed or high-intensity lighting, can impact on others within the community.

Preventing light pollution

Check to ensure that  lighting:

  • is illuminating only the area intended, not affecting neighbouring properties
  • is appropriate for the task required - lighting with too much power may increase glare and be more expensive to operate
  • for motion sensor-activated lighting, is adjusted to ensure that it only activates when movement occurs in the area intended
