Family history and genealogy

Researching your Family History can be fascinating. Following the initial work of tracking down ancestors some of the real fun can be investigating the types of work they did or community in which they lived.

The increased interest in this type of research has resulted in huge amounts of information in print and online. Stirling Council has a number of services which can help support those interested in conducting Family History research.

Stirling Council Archives

The Council Archives has a wealth of records that can help you take your family history further. Friendly, qualified staff can help you with your enquiries giving advice on where information may be held and assistance with the interpretation of the records that are held at the Archives.

Stirling Council Libraries

Stirling Libraries have a dedicated collection available in Central Library which can help with researching your family history and where required we can direct you to other organisations that may also be able to help you.

Stirling Registration Service

Since 1855, the law has required all Births, Deaths and Marriages in Scotland to be recorded by Registrars.  Stirling Registration service has online access to Birth, Deaths and Marriage Records, Census Records and Old Parish Registers and can use this information to help you trace your family tree. A range of search services are also available.

Stirling Council Cemeteries Service

The can help to find that missing link or trace a burial place.  This office contains burial records for the majority of cemeteries and churchyards within Stirling district.  Although some of the records go back to 1885, the majority start in the 1900s.  Any burial information required prior to these dates can be found at Stirling Council Archives.  A dedicated computer terminal, with a 'Public Browser', has been installed in the Cemeteries Service’s interview room at New Viewforth which you can use to search for burial records.  All our computerised interment records can be accessed using this system.  The room can be pre-booked and trained staff are on hand to help you use the system.
