Emergencies and emergency services
We have procedures in place to cope with the impact and effects of any kind of major emergency situation.
These action plans have been developed through working closely with our partner organisations, such as the police and fire brigade. They are designed to meet the needs of people in the Stirling Council area affected by any type of emergency, for example:
- severe weather/flooding
- transport or industrial accidents
- loss of electricity/water/gas
- any other sudden and unexpected incident.
The plans are flexible and allow for an appropriate response to the scale, duration and impact of an emergency.
Emergency Management and Response
Our Emergency Management and Response Team is led by the Chief Executive and made up of senior managers from all council services. Team members have all been specially trained and work closely with the Emergency Services, Health Board, central government agencies including the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), utilities companies (water, electricity and gas), and colleagues in neighbouring councils.
The Chief Executive is also assisted by other specialists, including an Emergency Planning Officer responsible for preparing and putting into action the response to any major emergency.
Procedures
The Emergency Management and Response Team have taken part in a variety of exercises and tests to ensure that our procedures would work in different emergency situations. They also have experience of responding to actual emergencies. Procedures are scrutinised and reviewed to make sure we have the appropriate responses in place to deal with any situation with appropriate resources and priorities.
The terrorist threat
Recent events indicate an increasing awareness of the possibility of terrorist attacks on the UK. The threat in Central Scotland is hard to assess, and we have no specific information on the likelihood of such an attack. However, we have reviewed our procedures in the light of this threat.
The Emergency Management and Response Team is liaising with our partner organisations in Central Scotland, and the Chief Executive meets regularly with the Chief Constable of Central Scotland Police as part of the Central Scotland Strategic Integrated Emergency Management Group.
