Sharing good practice
Parents as partners, developing school websites in partnership with parents
It is important to note that the headteacher of a school is responsible for any content hosted on a school website.
Schools have several options available to them:
create the website and host this on the council in house webserver using the registered domain name provided free from ScottishExecutive, e.g. www.myschool.stirling.sch.uk. If this domain name isused the website can only be updated from within the school at a designated computer. There is no cost to the school when using this option
create the website using free web space directly through an internet browser. You would not be able to use the registered school domain name
pay a company to design and host the school website. You would not be able to use the registered school domain name.
The ICT Curriculum Development Officer can support schools and parents working in partnership. When the officer is asked by a school to become involved, he can visit and meet with the Headteacher and parents involved.
There is ongoing training for school staff from the Curriculum Development Officer at Riverside ICT Learning Centre for web design using Microsoft Frontpage as the editing tool. This software comes as part of Microsoft Office and is therefore already installed on the classroom computers.
