Equipment and adaptations to the home

If you are struggling with aspects of daily activities as a result of illness or disability, you might benefit from the provision of daily living equipment or adaptations to promote your independence.  Occupational Therapists and Social Care Officers can complete an assessment of you in your own home and, depending on your situation, prescribe equipment or request adaptations to aid your independence.

Types of equipment

There are lots of different types of equipment available which can assist you in your home. These include:

  • bathing and toilet equipment
  • aids to help you dress and undress
  • special kitchen equipment
  • hoists

Types of adaptation

Adaptations to your home may include:
Adapted kitchen

  • minor changes like fitting grab rails or a banister
  • major changes like; replacing a bath with a level access shower or putting in a stair lift

How to get help with equipment and adaptations

You can refer yourself for an assessment.  Alternatively, anyone acting on your behalf, such as a friend, relative, a General Practitioner or a District Nurse can make a referral for an assessment for you.

Following your referral you will be visited by an Occupational Therapist or a Social Care Officer who is trained to carry out an assessment of your need for equipment and adaptations.  Further information regarding care assessment

The costs of equipment and/or adaptations

Equipment that you are assessed as having a need for is usually free of charge as it is on loan and should be returned to us when no longer required.

The costs of minor or major adaptations to your home may be chargeable.  This depends upon a number of things, for example whether it is your own house or if it belongs to the Council or another landlord.  You may be able to access certain grants to help pay for some of these costs.
