Sheltered housing - older people

What is sheltered housing?

Sheltered housing provide a range of services and facilities which can enhance quality of life for older people.  Sheltered housing complexes usually have a manager or warden who live at or near the complex and can help residents arrange services which they may need, such as liaising with Stirling Council to arrange additional support, such as personal care following a care assessment.  Most sheltered housing complexes also have communal areas, such as lounge rooms, gardens or laundry facilites.   Within a sheltered housing complex, residents have their own property, usually either a flat or bungalow.  

Most properties have been specifically designed for older people and have convenient features such as raised electrical sockets, walk-in showers and may also have adapted kitchens, for instance lowered work tops.  Within the property, usually therer will be the option to connect to a community alarm service, enabling residents (or even the alarm itself) to activate to seek assistance in the event of an emergency.  Some properties will also have been designed to enable wheelchair users to mobilise easily throughout the property.
