Preventative Treatment

Food	Access	Harbourage (possible nest sites)
Ensure all foods, particularly sugar, are covered. Work and floor surfaces should be cleaned.	Block all cracks and holes in walls and steps - difficult to do and may have limited effect	No realistic preventative measures

Conditions of Service by Stirling Council

• ants are only treated if indoors or if entering house via outdoor colony
• we may be unable to treat if the affected area has not been cleaned as ants can be attracted by tiny quantities of food e.g. crumbs and spillages
• because of the nature, location and size of ant colonies, treatment may only provide short term relief and consequently, we are unable to guarantee the elimination of the infestation

Food Businesses

To avoid a possible conflict of interest with our Food Safety Officers, treatment for ants will not be undertaken at food businesses except for occasional problems with ants in food premises owned by this authority where the Animal Control Officer is satisfied that there has not been any contributory negligence.
Where the Pest Control Officer finds evidence of contributory negligence in any food business he shall advise a Team Leader.

Information

• form nests in gardens, under paving stones and occasionally inside the house.
• each nest has one queen
• workers are very active foraging over a wide area
• will eat a wide range of foods e.g. sweet substances, seed, insects
• can be attracted by tiny quantities of food e.g. crumbs and spillages
• nest may survive for many years
• each year flying ants emerge and set up a new nest nearby
• nests tend to require direct sunlight for heat  

Other

• seasons for ants are April/May/June with flying ants in August/September

• can be a nuisance but not normally a health risk
• treatment only necessary when they become a serious nuisance within buildings
