ensure all foods are covered - work and floor surfaces should be cleaned block all cracks and holes in walls and steps unsound surfaces (eg tiles) should be made good and any possible harbourage sealed with a suitable filler.

Information

  • cockroaches are large insects which range in size from 10-23mm in length
  • they have long antennae and two sets of wings
  • cockroaches are nocturnal by nature
  • they spend the day hiding in cracks or under floor covering
  • cockroaches can carry food poisoning organisms on their bodies and will feed on almost anything including faecal matter
  • they are active and scavenge over wide areas
  • the young are white in colour but rapidly darken to medium brown

Other

  • cockroaches are not a common problem in Scotland.
  • found in warm indoor environments especially institution heating systems
