Private fostering

A Private Fostering arrangement is when a child under school leaving age is cared for by someone other than a parent or guardian, a close relative or an approved foster care for a period of time more than 28 days.

If you plan to be (or are currently involved) in a private fostering arrangement, you have a legal responsibility to inform us of the arrangement.

Our responsibilities

As a corporate parent, Stirling Council have a responsibility to ensure the welfare and safety of all children and young people in foster care, including children in private fostering arrangements.  We do this through completing a number of checks.  We are also able to provide support and guidance to both the parent and carer of the child involved in the private fostering arrangement.

For more information about Stirling Council's responsibilities in relation to private fostering, please read more about Private fostering responsibilities.

Please read "Are you looking after someone else's child" leaflet if you are:

  • a parent or guardian and intend in placing a child under school leaving age into a Private Fostering arrangement

or

  • caring for a child under a Private Fostering arrangement
