Legionnaires' Disease
Legionnaires' Disease is a potentially fatal pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. Infection is caused by the inhalation of fine droplets of water contaminated by the bacteria.
Legionella bacteria are commonly found in sources of natural water such as rivers and ponds. They may contaminate other water systems such as cooling towers and hot and cold water systems. They survive low temperatures and thrive at temperatures between 20 - 45°C. They are killed by high temperatures.
