Examples of financial assessments

The following examples of financial assessments illustrate how your contributions to your care are calculated.  For further information, please see Contributing to your care

Example 1

Ms Smith is 50 years old and the only person in the household receiving services.

Her weekly income is £130.40 per week.

This is made up of:

  • Incapacity Benefit of £99.15
  • Disability Living Allowance (care) of £20.55
  • Works pension of £10.70

Her essential housing costs are £5 per week - this is made up of Council tax.

The personal allowance for a single service user aged between 18-59 years is £118 per week.

She receives 3 hours of non-personal care per week at a cost of £9.60 per hour, which totals £28.80.

Less essential housing costs -£5
NET income £125.40
Personal allowance -£118
Sub-total £7.40
75% of sub-total (£7.40 x 75%) £5.55

Ms Smith receives £28.80 of care.

Given her financial circumstances, Ms Smith will be expected to contribute £5.55 per week.

Example 2

Mr Jones is 88 years old and is the only person in the household receiving services.

Her weekly income is £177 per week.

This is made up of:

  • Retirement pension of £86.05
  • Attendance allowance of £51.85
  • Pension Credit of £39.10

His essential housing costs are £5 per week - this is made up of Council tax.

The personal allowance for a single service user aged over 65 years is £166 per week.

He receives 4 hours of personal care per week at a cost of £9.60 per hour which totals £38.40.  He will not contribute to this charge as it is free as he is over 65 years.

He has a MECS alarm system, which is charged at £1.63 per week.

Mr Jones receives £38.40 of care.
