Libraries - local history and heritage
Want to find out more about the area you live in or perhaps you want to research the history of your house?
Our local libraries have a small collections of local material. A larger collection of local history material is available

Just some of the resources available:
Valuation Rolls
- Valuation Rolls for the Burgh of Stirling between 1855-1902. For each property they record the name and designation of the proprietor, the tenant, the occupier and the annual rateable value.
Historical Maps
- A collection of maps for the 19th and 20th Centuries including large scale maps for the Stirlingshire area and geological maps.
Newspaper Index
- The Stirling Observer Christmas Annual holds a wealth of information about events throughout the year including weddings.
13 local newspaper titles are available to view on microfilm including Stirling Journal (1820 – 1970) and the Stirling Observer. Various indexes are available to help you find relevant information. The Stirling Observer People Index 1911-1969 is one of the indexes which you can search online.
Local History and Heritage Groups
- A number of groups operate in the area, pick up a leaflet in the library or search our Community Information Database.
Online Images
- Look at our online gallery of historical postcards. You can send one free to a friend or come into a library and buy a copy.
