New Lifebuoys for River Forth
Thursday, 13th January, 2011
A warning from Stirling Council Fisheries last year - that lives are being put at risk by the actions of a few reckless people, has rallied local groups to help fund new lifebuoys
Stirling Community Safety Partnership has given £2,300 and the Rotary Club of the Carse of Stirling provided £200 to Stirling Council Fisheries to replenish and replace lifebuoys along the riverbanks.
The Council’s Fisheries Service manages fishing on the River Forth and River Teith and provides forty lifebuoys located at various points along the banks however, in recent years it has become a trend for people to needlessly throw the lifebuoys into the river, which has resulted in many being lost and putting lives at risk. Replacing lost lifebuoys is costing the Council in excess of £1000 per year. This extra funding has allowed the Fisheries Service to buy over 100 lifebuoys to replace and replenish lifebuoy stocks.
Stirling Council’s Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Environment Councillor Jim Thomson said: “Good has come out of a very serious situation were lives were being put at risk by the reckless actions of a minority of people. We’d like to thank the Community Safety Partnership and the Rotary Club for their kind donations which has been used to buy over 100 lifebuoys.”
Fisheries Officer Davie Jones said: “ We fully appreciate the very kind donations from the two groups which has allowed us to replace old lifebuoys and replenish our stocks so if anyone does get into difficulty on the river there will be a safety aid to help.”
