Fishing - launch 2012
Fishing season opened
The 2012 fishing season opened on 1 February with an official parade from Ancaster Square, Callander to the Meadows car park at the River Teith. Three times world spey casting champion Scott MacKenzie opened the Councils Fisheries for the new season by Provost Fergus Wood.
The River Forth was the top Beat in Scotland for 2010. This reflects the excellent conservation work carried out by the council and anglers, which has been vital in protecting existing stocks and creating excellent runs of salmon and sea trout every year.
In 2010 the council’s Fisheries beat on the River Forth produced 1,351 salmon and grilse. The beat at Callander produced almost 200 salmon and grilse and well over 300 sea trout. Anglers safely returned 70% of salmon and grilse to the water and should be applauded for their conservation of stocks.
Stirling Council is working in partnership with Angling Active Limited, Stirling Agricultural Centre, Stirling and the Forth Fisheries Trust to promote conservation of salmon and sea trout that run the Forth and Teith river system.
It is hoped that this initiative will encourage anglers to consider releasing fish so that they can go on to spawn. Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout are priority species for protection in Stirling Councils Local Biodiversity Action Plan.
