Roots Overview
Coming from the Community
Healthy Community organistaions willbe based on a clear understanding of their community's needs and aspirations. They will have carried out some form of planning work in which members of their community could participate which will have informed their own purpose and direction. The understanding they gain from this will be the basis for the types of projects and activities that they are carrying out. Healthy community organisations will not only do this as a one off exercise at the start but will revisit their communities through some kind of on-going review process which encourages community involvement-to check on needs and aspirations have changed and how they need to change to still be relevant.
Staying in touch with the community
It is also true that healthy community organisations will stay in touch with their community and not become disconnected from their roots. Healthy community organisations have evolved many ways of staying in touch-through newsletters, minutes on notice boards, open meetings etc. They will also often check back with the community over larger issues where they are unsure that they have a community agreement over what action to take.
Nourished and nourishing!
Keeping up the connection with its community roots- will also impact very directly on the number of members, users, clients and volunteers a community organisation has working for it- and unltimately its ability to keep itself going and remain relevant.
