Her Beach Body

His mother is stretching out on the drying sand

pale white against its deep tan

three children and a dog on early morning walk

run over her without thought

footprints blurring the division of sand and dust

he brought her in a plastic bag

camouflage for the urn

tipping contents to make a small scar

stood back, bowed

he thought the sea would bury her ashes

and she would rest here with a view of Arran

the scar stretches with every tide

splits the beach

the breeze stirs tiny waves of sand

which dance and die
